How to knot a tie

How to knot a tie

Today we will learn how to make a perfect tie knot. First of all, it is essential to know how many types of ties exist!

The various types of ties

  • The eight-centimeter ties, characterized by a modern width and suitable for all body types, also well suited for any shirt color.
  • The slim ties, with a maximum width of five centimeters, are suitable only for small neck types. Not recommended for people with a significant physique, with an opulent body and an abundant chest.
  • The knitted ties, in silk or wool, are usually used to obtain variations in less important looks, such as casual chic, or when wearing broken wool or cotton jackets. They go well with denim and carefree clothing.

The basic tie knot

It's the classic and basic tie knot, making the knot's size small, always elegant. It's not a trapezoidal knot and doesn't choke the neck.

This type of knot can be made very quickly, also suitable when in a hurry.

Let's see how to proceed to make it without problems and naturally:

  • First of all, we need to fasten our shirt well, with the recommendation that the collar is at least one centimeter away from the garment.
  • If someone has difficulty finding the right shirt collar for their body type, it is advisable to go to a tailor to have a custom-made garment.
  • Once the shirt is fastened, lift its collar. Take the tie, leaving the smaller end on the right, the larger one on the left, wrapping it around the neck.
  • Make sure that the smaller end of the tie is at the height of the shirt's fourth button.
  • Now pass the larger end over the smaller one, applying light pressure with the finger. Rotate it 360 degrees around the smaller one. Widen the pressure with the middle finger lightly and pass the larger end over it, threading it through the loop just created. At this point, we can lower it, always holding it tight, and lower it until the knot is made.
  • Underneath we will have the short end, above the long one: hold the lower end firmly and simply raise the created collar, starting from the knot, until it's tightened as desired.
  • The length of the long end of the tie must reach your belt. Now lower the shirt collar, perfectly centering our newly made tie knot.

The double windsor tie knot

This knot requires a lot of fabric. The initial logic is always that of the classic knot.

Let's see together how to proceed:

Fasten our shirt well, with the recommendation that the collar is perfectly distant also here from the garment at least one centimeter: a finger must pass between the fabric and the skin!

After fastening the shirt well, lift its collar. Take the tie, also in this case leaving the smaller end on the right, the larger one on the left, wrapping it around the neck.

Make sure that the smaller end of the tie is at the height of the shirt's second button, precisely because the double windsor knot requires a greater length of fabric.

In this case, immediately create a loop, doing the same on the other side. We will have two loops, inside which we pass the long end of the tie 360 degrees, starting from below and twice. Use your fingers to shape the knot, tightening it around the neck.

This knot is trapezoidal in shape, much more elegant, suitable for shirts with a wide and prominent collar, French style.

The double windsor knot can be made with any type of tie but is not suitable for a shirt with a narrow collar.
