How to match a tie

To match the tie properly with the rest of the outfit, there are some basic rules to follow. Here's everything you need to know to make a correct match.

The tie and shirt is a very popular garment in the male world, symbolizing elegance and style.

Unfortunately, it can often happen to make mistakes in matching, precisely because it is a widely used clothing item and there are different types on the market based on colors and patterns.

How to match the tie to the shirt?

BLUE TIE

It is the type of tie most used in work environments, because it conveys security and reliability.

It is better to wear it with a white or light blue shirt; if you have fair skin, it is preferable to choose a light blue shirt, as the white one will not go well with a very light skin type.

RED TIE

This tie color should only be matched with a white or light blue shirt. If you want to wear a striped shirt, you should choose very thin stripes.

BLACK TIE

It is the most elegant tie of all, usually used for weddings and other ceremonies, or events that take place in the evening.

To match it best, it is advisable to wear a white or very light gray shirt.

Therefore, it is not recommended to use a black tie during the day.

GRAY OR SILVER TIE

They come in shades of matte gray, shiny gray, or silver; matte ones are suitable for any occasion.

Silver ones are suitable for ceremonies, so it is better to choose them with a shiny and silk effect.

They can only be matched with white shirts.

REGIMENTAL OR STRIPED TIE

The striped tie should only be matched with a solid color shirt or a striped pattern shirt, for those who really want to dare. Be very careful about the direction of the stripes, in fact, those of the shirt must not follow the same direction as those on the tie.

PATTERNED TIE

They are available with flowers, small images or repeated embroidery. If the tie has these features, it must be matched with a solid color shirt. If you want to wear a striped shirt, the stripes must be very thin, so they are as little visible as possible.

PAISLEY PATTERN TIE

This type of tie is also called cashmere and is one of the most loved patterns by the male world; however, you have to be very careful with the match. You can only use a solid color shirt, in the same shade as the tie color or the dominant color if there are multiple colors.

SMALL POLKA DOT TIE

This type of tie should be present in every man's wardrobe. There is no particular rule for matching it, as this type of tie can be worn with different types of shirts. Obviously, a solid color shirt is preferable if you want to be safe without making a mistake.

LARGE POLKA DOT TIE

This type of tie goes well only with solid color shirts, especially if white.

KNITTED TIE

It is a sporty type of tie. It is advisable to match this tie with a solid color shirt, to give a casual and sporty look.

It is very important the skin color for choosing the right clothes, because for those who have olive or dark skin, it is better to choose to wear a white shirt with a dark jacket and matching tie, so dark blue or black. On the other hand, those with fair skin can choose to wear a light blue shirt with a beige or light blue jacket and matching tie, i.e., the color of the jacket.

How to choose the ideal tie based on the occasion?

There is a different type of tie, more suitable for each occasion.

Formal occasions

For work, an interview, or other formal events, it is better to use a tie with neutral colors such as gray, neutral, mauve, blue, or burgundy. In addition to solid colors, for pattern choices, you can opt for stripes, polka dots, or micro-patterns. It is recommended to avoid, on these occasions, ties with large logos or flashy patterns.

If you want to opt for a safe choice, choose shiny and silk ties for these occasions. These ties are great for not remaining anonymous, but always very elegant; for more casual professional environments, you can opt for ties with a textured pattern.

Casual occasion

If your workplace is more casual, you can still opt for ties; you can choose ties with small logos or small prints, which add a modern touch to your outfit.

If you like ties and knots and want to wear them on weekends or during casual and informal occasions, you can wear knitted or cotton ties.

Date

If you think you have to go to a date in a fancier restaurant or go to a first date, the perfect choice is a silk tie.

For an aperitif, you can choose a knitted tie and chino pants with a blazer.

Ceremony or wedding

For a wedding taking place during the day, choose bright colors and fabrics, while if the ceremony will be in the evening, you can choose a solid dark color tie such as black and blue or a patterned tie (with a delicate design, or abstract pattern).

If you are the groom, it is very nice to match the tie to the bride's dress; this way, you will create a beautiful couple's look.

Choosing the tie based on the season

Each season is different, with different temperatures, so you need to choose the tie with different fabrics. Even prints and colors can be worn in a specific season.

Ties to wear in summer

Linen or cotton ties are ideal to wear during the summer or spring; avoid wearing them when going to a formal event.

When it is very hot, it is great to use a silk tie, which is a fabric that can be used in all seasons and can be matched with different outfits, both professional and casual.

When the occasion is less formal, you can mix different seasonal fabrics, such as wearing a light blue linen tie with a green cotton shirt and the collar must have buttons down.

The most commonly used colors for summer ties are light blue and blue, and the less common ones are: yellow, pink, lilac, green, and orange.

The patterns are: small polka dots and regimental, which are oblique striped patterns.

Winter ties

For winter, a great choice is a wool tie. You can wear an alternative silk tie with dark colors and patterns with colors such as burgundy, green, and blue.

You can also try colors like mustard yellow, dark blue, olive green, dark gray, dark red, light green, and diagonal or straight patterns.

For casual winter events, you can use ties with patterns or choose a floral pattern.

For more formal and elegant occasions, it is better to opt for a solid color tie or thin stripes.
